Semi-finished components

Start from a formed body, not from tube

If you fabricate laboratory glassware, you probably start with tubing and blow every shape yourself. There is another way to begin. A blank is a semi-finished piece — the body already blown to shape, annealed and dimensionally controlled — so your bench work starts at the neck, the joint or the finish rather than at the bottom of the flask.

The idea

Where your work begins

The difference is not the finished article — it is which forming steps you own. Buying blanks removes the steps that are hardest to keep consistent, and leaves the steps where your own specification matters.

H-32 borosilicate glass tubing, the usual starting point

Route A

Starting from tubing

The usual approach in most workshops.

  • Cut and clean the tube
  • Blow the bottom and form the body
  • Control wall thickness and roundness
  • Anneal
  • Form the neck, joint or thread
  • Finish and inspect

Every body depends on the operator. Scrap and wall-thickness variation land on you.

Erlenmeyer flask blank: the body already blown and annealed, neck not yet formed

Route B

Starting from a blank

Steps 1–4 arrive already done.

  • Cut and clean the tube
  • Blow the bottom and form the body
  • Control wall thickness and roundness
  • Anneal
  • Form the neck, joint or thread
  • Finish and inspect

Your finishing work and your specification stay with you. Only the repetitive forming moves upstream.

Why it is worth it

What you actually gain

01 / CONSISTENCY

Same body, every lot

Bodies are formed on production tooling from our own H‑32 borosilicate tubing, so capacity, maximum diameter and effective height stay within the same envelope lot after lot.

02 / SKILL

Less dependence on one person

Blowing a consistent round bottom is the step that takes years to master. Removing it means output no longer tracks who is at the bench that day.

03 / MATERIAL

One glass, end to end

Blanks are H‑32 borosilicate (α = 32 × 10−7/K), the same material we melt and draw ourselves. No mixing of glasses with different expansion when you seal on your own parts.

“TS” denotes a standard taper ground joint. Type N indicates our N-form profile. Blanks are supplied unfinished: necks, joints, threads, graduation and printing are yours to complete.

Ordering

How supply works

Minimum order
By the case. Pieces per case depend on the size — larger bodies come fewer to a case. We will confirm the exact case quantity for the types you are interested in.
Export
Available. We ship overseas and can issue English invoices, packing lists and the documentation your customs process requires.
Freight
Blanks are bulky and fragile relative to their value, so freight matters more than it does for small parts. Consolidating types and sizes into one shipment is usually the difference between workable and not — tell us your full list and we will work out the most efficient way to pack it.
Lead time
Stock types ship soonest. Made-to-order and custom types are produced against your order; we confirm the schedule when we quote.
Beyond the list
If the body you need is not here, it becomes a custom forming inquiry. Send a drawing or a description of the finished article and we will tell you whether it is feasible — see OEM & custom glass.

Tell us which bodies you blow most often

The types you make repeatedly are the ones where blanks pay off first. Send us the shapes and capacities you go through in a year, and we will come back with case quantities, a quotation and a realistic view of the freight.
